Back-to-School Essentials: Simple Swaps to Support Your Kids This Year
Back-to-school season is here — and while pencils, folders, and backpacks are on everyone’s list, there are a few other essentials worth thinking about, too.
At Genesis Chiropractic, we care for a lot of Fox Valley families, and this time of year always brings the same question from parents: how do I set my kids up to feel their best for a busy school year? The good news is that it doesn’t take a total overhaul. A few simple swaps and steady habits go a long way.
Here are the ones we come back to again and again.
Stainless Steel Water Bottles
Kids sip from their water bottles all day long, which makes this one of the easiest places to trade plastic for stainless steel. A good bottle holds up to being dropped, tossed in a backpack, and used every single day — and it’ll usually last for years, so it pays for itself fast.
Simple, Nourishing Snacks
Keep it easy. Fresh fruit, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, meat sticks, Greek yogurt, sourdough crackers, homemade muffins, or a few packaged snacks with short, simple ingredient lists are all great picks. Steady fuel through the day supports focus, mood, and energy — no complicated meal-prep required.
Natural-Fiber Basics
Kids grow fast, so the start of the school year is a natural time to replace what they’ve outgrown. When you can, look for basics made from cotton, organic cotton, wool, or linen. You don’t need a whole new wardrobe — just swap pieces out as you go.
A Backpack That Fits
A backpack that’s too big, or worn on one shoulder, puts uneven strain on a growing spine. Choose one that fits your child’s body, encourage both straps, and keep it as light as you reasonably can. (Those things get heavy fast.) A well-fitted pack is one of the simplest ways to look after your child’s back all year long.
Shoes That Let Feet Move
Look for flexible shoes with a wider toe box that give growing feet room to move naturally. And once the shoes come off at home, barefoot time outside is always a win.
Sleep, Sunshine & Movement
One of the biggest adjustments back to school isn’t a product at all — it’s the change in routine. Earlier mornings, more sitting, and packed schedules are a lot for little bodies. Prioritize consistent sleep, get them outside when you can, and give them plenty of time to move and play after school.
Don’t Forget Their Spine
More sitting, heavier backpacks, sports, and a whole new routine make back-to-school a great time for a chiropractic check.
With Gonstead chiropractic, we don’t adjust the same way every time, or “just in case.” We specifically analyze the spine to determine if and where an adjustment is actually needed — then correct it precisely, by hand. It’s one more way to support your child’s body as they head into a busy new season.
Dr. Maycee is Webster Certified through the ICPA and has a real heart for caring for kids, so pediatric visits at Genesis are gentle, specific, and built entirely around your child.
You Don’t Have to Change Everything at Once
Here’s the part we most want you to hear: none of this has to happen overnight. Use what you already have, make swaps as things wear out or get outgrown, and choose what works for your family. Small, steady changes add up.
Here’s to a great school year.
